The doctors just did rounds ~ a team of about five. The attending physician is great....we really liked him.
They don't really have a conclusive idea of what is going on just yet, for a couple of reasons. The blood cultures aren't back yet, and the SIR-Spheres ordinarily cause inflammation, so it isn't clear what is an ordinary effect of the treatment and what is some new infection. The dead tissue caused by the radiation can cause infection as well, so there seem to be a number of things going on in Kurt's abdomen.
The scan of the lungs showed basically the same thing ~ some fluid. The doctors do think he has pneumonia, which can be treated with the antibiotics. Kurt is responding well to antibiotics, and his blood counts look much better. Evidently, the new chemo knocked the blood counts down, so the docs said that, if Kurt keeps on with this chemo, he should expect some transfusions in the future.
Kurt ate a big breakfast today...the most I have seen him eat in a week. He is still tired and experiencing some pain, but much improved from yesterday. The nurses are going to have him do some exercise to get the blood circulating and make sure he can get and hold plenty of oxygen.
It seems like he will be here at least tonight. The doctors say if he continues to respond well, they will look at switching him to oral antibiotics, which would mean he could go home. I think he is getting a little bored already...I am being sent home to get movies and things to do!
