15 years ago today, my life changed.
Standing out in a parking lot in Missoula, Montana, gathered with high school sophomores from around the state for a weekend youth leadership seminar, I heard a car door slam. All of us were wearing color-coded shirts to indicate what group we were in, so when I spun around to identify the offending noise, my eyes landed first on a shirt that matched mine. Ash gray was our color -- awful. I glanced at the faded denim shorts, black high-tops, black sunglasses, and quickly made my assessment. Jock. Cocky. Good gravy, he is actually SWAGGERING in, even though he is late. I had just recently turned 16, and firmly opposed tardiness.
I rolled my eyes and turned my attention back to the speaker plodding through the rules of the weekend. I didn't worry much about that guy -- boys rarely showed any interest in me. I was the friend, never the girlfriend. Besides, our group of students had plenty of adorable blondes to keep him busy. I was on a mission. Growing up, I had demonstrated early leadership characteristics, but painful junior high years had pushed me into my shell. I viewed this weekend as a turning point. Every school sent just one sophomore to this program, the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership seminar. I didn't know anyone else there, so I had the chance to be the real me, to bring that person out again, without fearing what my peers would think. It was a big weekend for me.
As I listened to the speaker, I suddenly became aware of someone standing behind me and a voice, whispering in my ear "Did I miss much?" I turned my head right into the most devastatingly handsome smile I had ever seen. Picturing it now, my heart still stops, just like it did then. Whoever this tardy boy was, he is H-O-T. As I stared dumbly at him, feeling the blush crawling up my neck and face, I remember thinking, why is he talking to me? Of all the girls in this group, why me?
Over the weekend, Kurt and I became immediate friends. Saying good-bye after that first weekend was hard -- we lived 200 miles apart, and had no reason to cross paths again. By the time I got home that night, Kurt had already called me, just to make sure I got home ok. It would be months, and hundreds of dollars in phone bills, before we would admit that there was more between us than friendship -- a brief kiss in a junior high parking lot during the Big Sky State Games, a phone call to exchange nervous "I love yous" before a football game. There were fights and break-ups, other relationships and long distances. But through it all, I never doubted that we were meant to be.
By the time I was 18, I had come to the melodramatic conclusion that if Kurt and I didn't marry, I would never be married. We broke up a few months later. But with the passage of time, a little more wisdom and slightly less drama, I know that statement to be true. If not Kurt, then no one. He is my best friend, my first kiss, my soulmate, my much better half. I spend every Friday watching chemo drip into him, but I know that God could not have worked so hard to bring us together, just to have us say good-bye now. I remember, back in high school, being asked how I could be so sure about Kurt. I explained that when I tried to picture my future without him, the images get fuzzy. In my minds eye, I can imagine what my future will be like -- kids, jobs, a home -- but if I try to picture those things without Kurt standing next to me, the images just blur. I quite literally cannot imagine a life without him. Whatever the purpose is for our lives, we haven't accomplished it yet. This war we are waging now is just preparing us for the next step in our lives.
So that is the story of how we met -- a story I love to tell. A week from now, we will celebrate 8 years as husband and wife. Fifteen years later, I still ask myself -- why me? Of all the women in the world, why did he pick me? I'm a lucky girl.

Jen, Kurt is a lucky man. amen
love, Jack
I will absolutely second that. I am the luckiest guy in the world to have found Jen!!
That always has been my favorite story! Plus I believe it was the first time Jen was ever speachless! I have every faith this is just one battle in your long life together because it is actually impossible for me to imagine the future without the two of you together. Kurt has been in my family over half my life (I was 12 when you two met - how crazy) so he is as close to a brother as anyone could be. He has even threatened to do background checks on the guys I date! You two are one of the inspirational stories that people here about and regain their faith in true love. Hold on to that - it gives you so much strength. I love you both!
jen that is an amazing story, and i loved reading every minute of it. I have every faith that you and Kurt will have your children and your happily ever after.

I was reading through misty eyes, Jen. That is so sweet & thought provoking. I think each of you got a prize -- just what (& who) you needed. Such a good story. I know you each are a pillar to lean on - so Blessed. Love ya -

If I type, "wow" or "awww" or "oh my gosh" it doesn't even do justice to the emotions that were evoked upon reading your post, Jen. We all knew after HOBY that Kurt had found his match, too. As Steph said that Kurt is as close to a brother that she has had, you have been that in a sister for me. It's hard to believe that 15 years (half of my life!!!) is how long you two have been together. Thank you for sharing that story...you two ARE the perfect match for each other. I have thought that and shared that with our family many a time, how you two are seriously peas in a pod. And the minute I received your text back in September about the initial diagnosis, I was still saying that same thing. There is no one else I would want fighting this fight alongside my brother, and with our families together. Thanks for sharing the story again --- I'll never forget all the late night calls either. :)
I love you both!!! Keep the fight, keep the faith.
Kurt and Jen
I'm sorry I do not know you, Your story was an inspiration to me. Congratulations and keep up whatever you"re doing.
Kurt I can't imagine what you are experiencing.
In talking with your g'ma she told me that you are definitely looking forward to an exciting sailing season. Best of luck, and give it all you have to give.
In my time with the Lord this AM, I found in Isa.55, vs 10 - 12 the following: For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater: SO SHALL MY WORD BE that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, it shall prosper in the thing whereunto I sent it. For ye shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
Enjoy the life you are living, Read John 1, and put yourself with the WORD living in you. You cannot lose you are a winner! vs 14 says THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH and dwelt among us. Grab onto that and do not let go. I have held on to that thru some pretty rough times.I remember setting those wheel lines at 5;00 in the AM. The pheasants were waking up, so many birds alive with the joy of spring and it seemed that the cottonwoods along the river were clapping their hands.
Cheers, enjoy, keep the faith, I Peter 2: 24.
Love you all

This story just gets better every time I hear it. Thanks for sharing, and for making us all cry! JO - Jack is right and I've told you this before - Kurt is lucky. But I feel lucky, too, to have such amazing friends as you guys. Don't know what I would do without you.
Kurt & Jen - I wish that I was better with words - it keeps me from being as responsive as I'd like to be when I see both of you expressing yourself so well!
I was reminded yesterday by one of my co-workers of one of his friends that entered cancer treatment with only a 10% chance of recovering - an he's now cancer free. But, it was the team effort of husband and wife supporting each other that kept them fighting. We admire the 2 of you so much - let the strength of your relationship and faith help you fight this - it will be defeated. Love you! Robin.
Jenn - - we have always known how special you are - even when you did not know it - - so it is only natural that you would have attracted a very special person - -
Keep the faith...
Love, Grannie Channie & Grandpa Vic
I echo a couple comments that mention how lucky Kurt was in finding Jennifer :) For the record, I have never posted a comment on anything before, but had to do so once I found out that Jennifer and Kurt met at HOBY! So funny! Keeping you both in my thoughts-DaNita
HOBY has such a great cult following. Someday, I'll have to tell the story about the time I picked up the phone and Hugh O'Brian was on the line. That was pretty wild. I got an autographed photo out of that call. Good times.
Jennifer....what a sweet story...and just the beginning...15 years is nothing compared to the life, love and forever you and Kurt will continue to share. Keep up the good fight...still thinking and praying for you both!
~Cynthia
Just a note to let you know that we are praying for your recovery..
Have not written before ... this whole blogger thing is different and kind of intimidating....
We've wanted to connect though so... here goes....
I too, have been fighting cancer. The Lord is so wonderful.!.. He has and is a very constant help in times of trouble, fear, anxiety, the unknown and ?'s. He is our healer also. I have chosen the "kind of" natural path. I say that because , well, we did not know what to do or where to start. We did not go to a "certified" natural healer. We knew that we were not going to do traditional either. So that made us feel like we were just hanging out there on a big limb...When the LImb is the Lord , that is a good one to be hanging onto...huh? After praying about it we just asked the Lord to bring things to us that I needed to do. I have done several different things. They have all been helpful. I am doing very well, now..
Well, back to the beginning... When the energy level, the feeling of life is not present, one feels and knows that the only One who can help is the Lord. My desire for living was there... but, very weak..I found out, that desire also takes energy. I asked The Lord if I was going to make it. He did not answer. That upset me because I like to know how to plan. When I had heart trouble the Lord gave me the scripture about Lazarus, letting me know that He would heal me and I would make it...that I would not die. This time He just kept telling me "Trust Me" . Everytime I prayed about it. "Trust Me" Well, Lord, You do know that I trust you, sure would like You to answer my question, though. "Trust Me" is what He'd say to me. So I learned a new level so to speak of Trust. It is easy to Trust when things are going the way we want and we have no big worries.. But 'Trust Me' takes on a whole new meaning when from the world point of view.. there is nothing left. "Two little words.. Trust Me" Wow !!, how they take on a whole lot of thought and meaning. In my "Trust Me" lessons the Lord gave me Ps 33:6-9 and Ps 3316-22 "By the Word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth" Wow! The complex, huge, magnificient heavens and all that were therein... made .. by His Word!. I got stuck on that. He is BIG enough and POWERFUL enough to just say/speak .... Just His Word.. and the heavens and all their hosts came into being! I've read and heard this before ; but, I never just stopped and meditated upon this before. Just His Word and the breath of His mouth AND ALL came into being? Awesome! WOW!!
vs 7 "He gathers the waters of the sea together as an heap: He lays up the depth in storehouses. " What came to mind was Him pinching His thumb and first finger together holding the seas and then leting them go as a heap! Amazing! and everything stayed within its given boundaries.! What Power and Authority!! It was just mind boggling! vs 8"Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in AWE of Him". Lord, looking at You from this perspective, Why am I even questions?? vs 9 "For He spake, and it was done; He commanded and it stood fast". Like a Rock.... unmoveable.. . Stedfast! When our Lord speaks, nothing will change it. WOW! "Trust Me" Yes, Lord, I can Trust You... Help me with my lact of Trust. You are dependable when I am not. Nothing is greater than You. Nothing is too hard for You! Help me to stay in the center of Your will .. I do Trust You. When I came to that inner commitment, it was at first scary. Isn't that crazy? yes, scary. Because I had to let go and let God. That , for me, was scarie. Of Course, there was nothing that I could do on my own anyway, but holding on to ? made me feel better. Yep, the Lord is totally and completely trustworthy in the scary, anxious, unknown moments when I do not want to even think of the whole picture of possibilities. Strange... the whole picture of possibilities did not scare me any more. They had no more power over my emotions.. BECAUSE the Lord showed me that He is completely TRUSTWORTHY and in Him I had nothing to fear. "Trust Me" our Lord God is saying... I AM your Heavenly Father, Redeemer, Saviour, Delivere, Healer, Protector, Provider and your all.
Kurt and Jennifer, I did not mean for this to be so long.. Just want you to know that we do care.. and that WE do pray and ask the Lord to heal you and to bring you through this experience more full of the Lord and the power of His might. Blessings upon you both. Montana Sunshine
Okay, but everyone knows that the "sage" group was really the coolest. How could I have been at the same HOBY and not have met you....how could we have been born in the same hospital only 12 days apart and not have met you....only to meet many years later in Minnesota of all places! Great story!
