I can never remember -- what is the traditional gift for the one-year anniversary of a cancer diagnosis? Is it paper? Pepto?? I'm just never sure...
So, yep -- one year ago today, Kurt was diagnosed with cancer. Wild, isn't it? I can't believe it has been a year. It has both flown and dragged by. So much is a blur, and yet it seems like we have spent 4 years sitting in waiting rooms. Kurt and I have reflected on this milestone a little, but I am sort of ambivalent. It is crazy to think that we have been at this for a year, but I am much more focused on what the fall holds for us with the more aggressive treatments Kurt is exploring.
Three weeks away from the hospitals and chemo was wonderful - coming back today was a little weird. The things that had become routine -- the talking ticket machine in the parking lot, seeing the giant "Cancer Center" sign as soon as I step off the elevator -- seemed a little jarring this morning. But, the routine comes back quickly -- hellos to the ladies at the coffee shop, hugs from the nurses. I'll head down to the pharmacy to get refills and the woman taking the prescription will mention that she hasn't seen me in a while -- which she says every month when I get refills. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Right now, Kurt is currently remembering what IV Benadryl feels like. :) He is rested and refreshed -- the rash has cleared up a lot. The sunrise this morning was beautiful, we had a very good fantasy football draft last night....really, things are going pretty well!
